Even though it is 83 degrees today, this first day of fall, I can hear change coming as the breeze blows through the trees. Change in the seasons and change in me.
The trees are coloring earlier this year. It is a time for bonfires, caramel apples, and pumpkins to help us transition to the winter that is coming. Transitions in my life as in the seasons need to be gradual ones. If it happens to fast, then I get overwhelmed and can't get to my new place. But if the transition is slower and more gradual, I hardly notice it until it is there.
Signs, the movie, is one of my old favorites. Mel Gibson plays a priest who loses his faith when his wife dies. Her last words haunt him as they have no meaning. He takes it to mean that there is no God. There is no one watching out for us.
Yet, as events unfold in the movie, her last words play a key part in saving the life of her son and in restoring the faith of her husband.
We all have times our life that we lose faith. When things happen that don't seem to make sense at the time. That is what faith is though...living through those times. Living in and through the changes and knowing God will reveal the answer to all your questions in his timing, not ours.
When good-meaning people say the wrong thing during our transition times, I remember the friends of Job. They were his friends, but they tried too hard. Instead of just being there for Job, they felt they had to give advice. It is a common thing in this world. People try to help when God is the one that needs to help. We can be God's hands and feet, but we can't be God.
Enjoy this time of change in your lives and may your transition times be gradual and full of God's signs that say...God is here, be faithful, don't despair...it will all work out.
